What makes a dinner keto
A keto dinner is simpler than the keto snack aisle makes it look. Build the plate from three parts:
- A protein: chicken thighs, ground beef, pork, salmon, shrimp, eggs or tofu
- Non-starchy vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, green beans, spinach, cabbage, peppers, mushrooms, asparagus
- Fat for cooking and flavor: olive oil, butter, cheese, avocado, cream, nuts
What comes off the plate is starch and sugar: rice, pasta, bread, tortillas, potatoes, corn, sugary sauces, and most beans and lentils. Onions, carrots and tomatoes are fine in cooking amounts, but they add up quickly when they're the main vegetable.
The planner aims each keto dinner at under about 20 grams of net carbs per serving, where net carbs means total carbohydrates minus fiber. If you follow a daily carb limit, remember that breakfast, lunch and snacks count against it too.
A 5-dinner keto week
Five dinners leaves room for leftovers or a night out. A typical week for two:
- Sheet-pan chicken thighs with broccoli and parmesan
- Burger bowls: seasoned ground beef over shredded lettuce with cheddar, pickles, tomato and a mustard-mayo sauce
- Salmon with garlic butter and green beans
- Pork and cabbage stir-fry with peppers and mushrooms in a soy, ginger and garlic sauce made without sugar
- A spinach, mushroom and cheese frittata with a side salad
Nothing on that list is a keto imitation of something else. Cauliflower rice and zucchini noodles have their place, but a week of ordinary meat-and-vegetable dinners is easier to cook and cheaper than one built on substitutes.
Feeding people who aren't keto
In a lot of households one person is eating keto and everyone else isn't. You don't need to cook twice. Make the keto dinner and put a starch on the side for the rest of the table:
- Taco night: lettuce cups or a bowl for you, tortillas for everyone else
- Stir-fry: cauliflower rice for the keto plates, a pot of regular rice for the others
- Burger bowls: buns for anyone who wants a regular burger
- Chicken thighs: a tray of roasted potatoes next to the broccoli
- Frittata night: crusty bread on the table
In the planner, add a note under "Anything else?" such as "rice or tortillas on the side for the kids," and it will plan around it.
Keto grocery list
Most of a keto grocery list is fresh food, so it's the part of the week worth planning carefully:
- Meat & seafood: chicken thighs, ground beef, pork shoulder or chops, salmon, a bag of frozen shrimp, bacon
- Dairy & eggs: eggs, butter, heavy cream, sour cream, cream cheese, block cheddar and parmesan
- Produce: broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, green cabbage, spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers, avocados, lettuce, lemons, garlic
- Frozen: broccoli, green beans, spinach and cauliflower rice
- Pantry: olive oil, mayonnaise, mustard, soy sauce or tamari, hot sauce, chicken broth, canned tuna, almonds or walnuts
- Spices: garlic powder, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, Italian seasoning
The planner writes your list from the week's dinners and sorts it by aisle, so you only buy what those five dinners need.
Keeping keto near $100 a week
Keto gets expensive when the week is steak, salmon and packaged keto products. At typical 2026 US supermarket prices, a cheaper base looks like this:
- Eggs, for a frittata night and fast lunches
- Chicken thighs, which cost less than breasts and are harder to overcook
- Ground beef or pork in a larger pack, split and frozen
- Frozen vegetables, which are cheap and already trimmed
- Green cabbage, one of the cheapest vegetables in the store, for slaw, stir-fries and roasted wedges
- Block cheese you shred yourself instead of pre-shredded bags
Keep salmon or shrimp to one dinner a week. If a dinner comes in over budget, tap Cheaper on its ticket and the grocery list updates.
Common mistakes
- Sugar in sauces. Barbecue sauce, teriyaki, ketchup, sweet chili sauce, honey mustard and many bottled dressings and marinades can carry more carbs than everything else on the plate. Read the nutrition label on anything in a jar.
- Trusting the front of the box. Packaged keto breads, bars and snacks are expensive, and the net-carb number on the front often subtracts sugar alcohols as well as fiber. Check the nutrition panel for total carbs.
- Forgetting the small stuff. Onions, tomato sauce and sauces thickened with flour all add carbs in amounts that are easy to miss.
- Leaving out vegetables. A plate of meat and cheese is technically keto, but it gets old fast, and vegetables are where most of the fiber in a keto week comes from.
About the carb numbers
Net-carb targets are AI estimates based on each recipe's ingredients and portions, not measured values. The real number depends on brands, the size of your vegetables and how much ends up on your plate. If you need precise counts, weigh your food and use a tracker that works from measured nutrition data.
Keto also isn't right for everyone. If you have diabetes or kidney disease, or you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before you start. This planner writes dinners that fit the carb target you picked. It doesn't promise weight loss or any other health result.
